For many, finding great ice breaker activities for your particular event might be daunting. If you one of the few who are looking for great ideas then this post is for you. As a teacher for many years, I found that many schools used 1 or all of the below mentioned activities. Each one of these activities can be adapted for towards a specific goal.

1. ICE BREAKER ACTIVITY 1- DEFEND THE EGG

Purpose of this team building ice breaker: creative teamwork

Group Size for this team building ice breaker: Teams of 4-5 people

What do you need for this team building ice breaker? Raw eggs, several plastic straws, masking tape, newspaper and other materials of your choice

How much time does it take for this fun ice breaker? 30+ minutes (20 minutes is for prep time)

Objective of the icebreaker: In small groups participants design an egg package to save an egg from breaking when dropped.

Procedure:

  1. Explain the rules such as the mission of the game is to protect the egg from cracking using teamwork, creativity and good design.
  2. Decide on an appropriate amount of time (e.g. 10 minutes) and then instruct them to begin and then tell them to place their egg inside the structure.
  3. When time is up, collect all the structures.
  4. Drop the structures from at least 15 feet in elevation and then carefully inspect them to see if the eggs survived.
  5. The winners are the groups that successfully protected the egg

2. ICE BREAKER ACTIVITIES – FEAR IN A HUT ACTIVITY 

Purpose of this team building ice breaker: Improve teamwork

Group Size for this team building ice breaker: At least 8 but not larger than 20 people.

What do you need for this team building ice breaker? Writing utensils, sheets of paper and a hat

How much time does it take for this team building ice breaker? Five minutes of writing time plus one to two minutes of participation.

Objective of the icebreaker: To promote unity and group cohesion. The purpose is to

Procedure:

  1. Distribute a sheet of paper and a writing utensil to each person,.
  2. Instruct them to anonymously write a fear or worry they have. Tell them to be specific and as honest as possible but not in a way that they can be identified.
  3. Collect each sheet into a large hat after everyone is done writing a fear or worry.
  4. Shuffle the sheets and pass out one per person.
  5. Take turns reading one fear aloud and each reader should attempt to explain what the person who wrote the fear means.
  6. Discuss as a whole group what some of the common fears were after all fears have been read and elaborated.

3. ICE BREAKER ACTIVITIES – PHOTO SCAVENGER HUNT

Purpose of this team building ice breaker: Improve teamwork

Group Size for this team building ice breaker: teams of three or four people

What do you need for this team building ice breaker? One camera (digital or polaroid) for each team.

How much time does it take for this team building ice breaker? You should allocate plenty of time for this activity.

Objective of the icebreaker: To enable people to capture good memories and also have some experience working as a team.

Procedure

  1. Prepare a list of about twelve interesting places, things and circumstances that can be captured using a camera. Some examples of items  you can write are:
  2.  A family of animals
  3.  A group photo with local celebrity or someone famous
  4.  A very relaxing place
  5.  Something big and the color pink
  6.  The biggest tree
  7. A group photo with someone dressed in very formal attire
  8. A photo with a yellow car
  9.  A human pyramid of at least seven people
  10.  The funniest thing you can find
  11.  Something that begins with the letter “z”
  12. Make enough copies of the list for each team
  13. Distribute cameras and copies of the list you made to each team.
  14. Set a time limit (e.g. 2 hours) then instruct the teams to find as many things as they can on the list and for each item, take a picture with all the group members in the photo.
  15. When time expires, have all members reconvene and present their photos along with their checklist.
  16. Award one point for each successful photo item and bonus points for extra creativity effort.
